Buchanan and Trump Political humorist Mark Russell has been referring to the Reform Party lately as, the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Reform Party. With the defection of Pat Buchanan from the GOP to the house that Perot built, and the addition of tycoon Donald Trump Russell's description is moving away from a humorist description to a literal one. After decades of service Buchanan leaves a party with a majority in both houses in congress, and the lions share of state governors, for a party with a former professional wrestler, as it's standard bearer. The one time free trader – who was a top aid to Presidents Nixon and Reagan – has embraced an America first isolationism that was totally out of place in the Republican Party of today. Buchanan has remained steadfast in the other tenants of conservatism. He remains staunchly pro-life, and is generally opposed to gay rights. It is hard to imagine the pro-choice Perotites being comfortable with him, and vise-versa. This is where our man Trump enters the picture. Minnesota Governor Jessie Ventura – who has no use for Buchanan - apparently sees potential in the casino king as an alternative to the renegade conservative. This entire situation could be laughed off as political joke – until one remembers the millions in matching federal funds the Reform Party will be receiving for the general election. That and the fact that either candidate could very well draw enough votes from either party (the Republicans, in the opinion of this writer) to affect the outcome of the presidential election. On NBC's Meet the Press this Sunday Trump called Buchanan a "Hitler Lover". Trump went on to say " I guess he's an anti-Semite." Sounds like the Reformers could use some reforming themselves.
